Volkswagen Keyless Entry and Push-Button Start

Volkswagen has been around since decades and is famous for their classic automobiles. There are also many popular newer models that feature features such as keyless entry and the push-button start.

From the 1930s until the 2000's, Volkswagen used a simple metal key with an ability to flip. They eventually switched to keys equipped with a chip and later still to smart keys.

Keyless Entry System

Modern automobiles have key fob systems that allow you to start the car and unlock the doors without touching the vehicle. These systems use radio frequency signals to transmit and receive information between the key fob, and the car. Special circuitry is utilized to ensure security. Certain models are more advanced than others, with extra features like remote start that only allows the car to start when the key fob is within a certain distance.

There are numerous options for adding these systems to your car no matter if you purchase it or add them afterward. Certain systems only open the door for the driver and others provide additional convenience features, such as a smartphone app that allows you to lock or unlock your car from anywhere. Some systems include an alarm.

Keyless Start System

Keyless start lets you start your car and enter it by pressing a single button. It's not necessary to reach into your pockets or unlock the door with an actual key. When you press the button and a unique signal is received from the key fob is sent to the ignition to start the car.

The system is similar to the smart key.  G28  or two are set up around the vehicle to detect the electronic ID as you close to the fob. The car's receiver then signals to turn off the immobilizer, and transmit energy to the starter circuit that starts the engine.

By pressing and pressing the button, you are able to stop the system as soon as your engine has started. The same signal is also used to lock your doors so that you don't have to fret about someone stealing or locking you out of your car.

Although many of the latest VW models come with a keyless start option as standard, older models have it as an additional feature. If you have an older VW equipped with this feature, your key fob likely contains what's referred to as an "backup mechanical key" that can be inserted into a special emergency port located in the dash or steering column to start your car. For more details, refer to your owner's manual or service information.

Keys With Transponder Chips

These microchips with electronic circuitry are incorporated in the head part of your Volkswagen key. The chip transmits a message to your car whenever the key is turned on and put into the ignition lock. The signals inform the car that you have the correct key, which allows it to unlock and start the engine. The chip does not require any battery power to operate it is able to receive an audio signal transmitted by the antenna ring of your car.

Prior to the year 2000, most cars used simple metal key. In the early 2000s, many automakers began using a keyfob with a switchblade feature - the metal key would pop out of the locking fob of the remote when the button was clicked. This became a fad and is still in use today.

The Volkswagen replacement keys will have a transponder which needs to be cloned to match the car's systems. It is a simple process which can be carried out at home using a key cloning tool like the KEYDIY X2 remote Cloner or another device similar. Bring proof of ownership, such as the driver's licence or registration of your vehicle, if you are getting a key made or replaced.

Lost Keys

You can buy the key finder, which costs around $20, should you be concerned about your Volkswagen keys. These tiny devices function by sending an electronic signal to your mobile when your keys are in close proximity. These devices are ideal for parking spaces with lots of traffic and low lighting. They are also water-resistant and can assist you in finding your car if it is stolen.

The best method of avoiding losing your VW keys, however, is to keep them in a single location, such as on a hook by the front door or in your pockets. You can also get a key made by a locksmith. This is usually less expensive than buying a new one from a dealer.

If your Volkswagen has a chip-key, you can get a replacement from the dealership in the event that it gets lost or damaged. To do this you must visit the dealership with your title or registration along with evidence that you are the owner. The dealer will order an entirely new Volkswagen key. The customer must return the vehicle to the dealer for the key programmed. You may also try with a locksmith who should be able provide a key based on the VIN.
